Engineering center, Medicaid relief in state budget

HICKORY
The General Assembly appears to be set to adjourn its session this week with a budget and several pieces of legislation that could have a profound impact on Catawba County.
If the current proposed budget is approved, the North Carolina Center for Engineering Technologies will receive $600,000 in recurring operating funds. The legislative body is set to give its final approval on the 2007-09 budget today. The budget would then go to North Carolina Governor Mike Easley for his signature.
The center is off Tate Boulevard and will offer courses from Appalachian State University, Western Carolina University, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and community colleges.
Local legislators garnered $300,000 for the center last year, significantly less than the more than $1 million originally sought. (more…)
