RALEIGH — Gov. Mike Easley on Wednesday unveiled an incentive plan for the state’s existing manufacturers that mirrors pending legislation intended to benefit Fayetteville’s Goodyear plant.
Easley’s proposal of an alternative plan fuels speculation that he will veto a bill that would provide $4 million to Goodyear annually for 10 years.
It appears the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. plant would qualify for grants under the governor’s plan; however, the company would have to compete for funding with other state manufacturers. In the bill approved by the General Assembly earlier this month, Goodyear was the only company that qualified.
A key difference in the bill and Easley’s proposal is the number of employees a company must have to be eligible for state grants. The bill requires 2,000 employees, and Easley’s plan requires 1,500.
Efforts to reach a spokeswoman from Easley’s office and to reach Goodyear spokesman Richard Evans were unsuccessful.
