Governor vetoes Goodyear grants

With N.C. legislators threatening override, a confrontation looms

RALEIGH –
Gov. Mike Easley and the General Assembly on Thursday veered toward a potentially historic showdown over corporate giveaways.
In the morning, Easley vetoed an incentives package worth up to $40 million to the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. plant in Fayetteville, and by the afternoon, legislative leaders were forecasting an override.
Easley, a Democrat and the first N.C. governor to use the veto, could become the first to have it overridden.
"Maybe it’s time," said Sen. Tony Rand, a Fayetteville Democrat, Senate majority leader and a chief sponsor of the bill Easley flushed.
House Speaker Joe Hackney, a Chapel Hill Democrat, said the House would override if members voted now. When the General Assembly meets, House members will consider the veto first. If they trump Easley, it will go to the Senate. Three-fifths of the members present in each chamber have to vote in favor of an override.
Easley acknowledged the possibility: "If they want to override, they can." (more…)
