Money for incentives but not police?

The state legislature went into special session to override a veto by Gov. Easley on a $40 million taxpayer (yes, remember who pays for it all) giveaway to tire manufacturers Goodyear and Bridgestone in eastern N.C. Only in the General Assembly could the original $40 million be rejected and then restructured in a compromise to be 50 percent larger. The plants are not in our backyard, but remember who is paying.
What about our family-owned and operated facility in our state that each day works hard to supply products made in the U.S. with quality and success, not due to, but in spite of, state or federal government? No incentives or special favors built these businesses, but a group of lawmakers was trying to force all small companies to subsidize union jobs in Cumberland and other counties with cash giveaways. It’s hard to hear folks complain about not having money for schools and police when they can give away millions in incentives, fund countless nonprofits and overprotect their fund balances. (more…)
