Inside the state budget: Green going for the green

‘); } RALEIGH — North Carolina taxpayers will be spending $1 million over the next year to help foster businesses considered environmentally friendly.
Lawmakers, during the 2007 session of the General Assembly, appropriated the money as part of their $20.7 billion budget. The budget establishes an NC Green Business Fund to provide grants to smaller private businesses, non-profit organizations and state agencies to
encourage growth of a “green” economy in the state.
The program was pushed by Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue, along with help from Sen. Charlie
Albertson, D-Duplin, and Rep. Joe Tolson, D-Edgecombe.
“Anything we can do to reduce our pollution and create jobs and put less stress on our natural resources, I think we would all benefit from that,” Albertson said.
Max Borders, a policy analyst for the Civitas Institute, a conservative policy organization based in Raleigh, doesn’t see much benefit coming from the program. (more…)
