WASHINGTON — North Carolina’s senators voted against expanding funds for a children’s health insurance program Thursday night, but the bill passed overwhelmingly and sets up a veto fight with President Bush.
Republican Sens. Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr both said they support the current State Children’s Health Insurance Program, known as SCHIP, but not an expansion in funding to $60 billion over the next five years. Bush has said the $35 billion increase is too much.
The Senate voted 67-29 for the bill, which is enough to override a presidential veto, but the House approval this week fell short of a veto-proof majority.
“With a sustained veto likely, I hope that Congress can come up with an acceptable and fiscally responsible reauthorization that stays true to SCHIP’s original intent,” said Dole.
SCHIP helps fund North Carolina’s Health Choice, which provides medical insurance to kids in families of four with an annual household income of less than $41,300. This includes 3,376 children in Buncombe County. (more…)
