Basnight criticizes Navy’s plans

Senate leader Marc Basnight says "untruths" have built distrust between N.C. officials and Navy leaders seeking to build a practice landing field in the state.
In a recent letter, Basnight wrote to a state panel studying the Navy’s proposed landing field. He says that the Navy’s current ideas for building in the northeastern part of the state are "absolutely unacceptable."
The Democrat from Dare County says the sites pose a danger to public safety, public health, the environment and the property rights of people living nearby. He suggests that the Navy pursue an offshore training platform to practice landings.
The Navy has been seeking a site for six years. It first wanted to build in Washington and Beaufort counties but backed off that request amid outcry from state officials. The Navy is now eyeing six potential sites that may be studied further. (more…)
