N.C. can’t stop global warming, but it can respond creatively
Perhaps U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole summed it up for a growing number of North Carolinians who have moved past initial skepticism and embraced the call for taking action on global warming.
"North Carolina has many natural treasures, from our mountains to the coast, and we must do our part to make our air clean and be good stewards of the earth for future generations," she said. "The solution to the serious problem of climate change is not inaction."
Sen. Dole, a Republican, made those remarks in cosponsoring legislation promoting market-based approaches to global warming. The bill targets a 60 percent reduction in global warming emissions, creating a nationwide program allowing carbon emissions to be bought and sold by industries working to meet new standards.
What’s significant about the bill is not just what it proposes, but that there’s a bipartisan agreement emerging in Washington about meeting the challenges posed by global climate change. It’s similar to the growing determination in cities and counties and Raleigh to take common-sense steps to deal with climate change. (more…)
