RALEIGH –
Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue used an incorrect birth date for more than two decades because doing so was important to her first husband, who was younger, according to records and her campaign.
Perdue was born Jan. 14, 1947, but she has often listed the date as Jan. 14, 1948. The switch allowed Gary Perdue, born Oct. 6, 1947, to appear older.
"At the time, in the early ’70s, that issue was important to her husband and to the marriage. That’s why she did that," Perdue spokesman David Kochman said.
The Perdues divorced in 1994, and Gary Perdue died in 1997. Beverly Perdue is running for N.C. governor in 2008.
Her rival for the Democratic nomination, State Treasurer Richard Moore, has made an issue of the inconsistencies in Perdue’s background. She has given varying descriptions of her doctorate and once noted that her father worked in a coal mine while omitting that he later became a wealthy mine owner.
Perdue has pointed to inconsistencies in how Moore has described his diploma from the London School of Economics. (more…)
