Bill in Congress can help protect N.C. from perils of global warming

North Carolinians can be forgiven for believing the skies that cover the Tar Heel State are bluer than anywhere else in the world. Our state’s beauty is renowned, and we’re rightly proud to call North Carolina home. We’re also protective.
This summer the N.C. General Assembly took a bold step to preserve our state’s beauty and improve its economy by passing an energy bill that included a Renewable and Efficiency Portfolio Standard (REPS). The legislation is designed to harness our state’s abundant renewable and energy efficiency potential in order to generate up to 12.5 percent of its energy needs by 2020.
Not only will this be good for our air quality, it also will create homegrown jobs from our own renewable energy sources, rather than send more than half our energy dollars out of state to buy fossil fuels. Currently, 60 percent of our state’s power comes from coal-fired plants powered by coal mined outside our borders. more…
