Yet more required before U.S. has realistic energy policy
The new fuel economy standards and energy efficiency standards President Bush signed into law this week move the United States toward conservation and energy independence, a welcome change in direction for a federal government that for decades refused to adopt consistent, responsible energy policy.
Yet not everything in this sweeping energy bill is smart. Sharply increased ethanol requirements may prove technologically and economically infeasible. Americans also will need to brace for an impact on their wallets and on the choices they face as consumers.
For the first time in 32 years, the federal government has set higher fuel standards for new cars and light trucks, the vehicles most in demand by consumers. The groundbreaking energy bill Congress passed this week also requires improved standards for lighting, commercial and government buildings and appliances such as refrigerators and dishwashers.
