A state committee is taking a shotgun approach to reducing North Carolina's appalling dropout rate: By spreading $7 million among 60 groups with nearly as many plans for attacking this costly problem, the Committee on Dropout Prevention hopes to be able to find something that works.
Given that past efforts have done little to reduce the dropout rate, this approach makes about as much sense as any.
Fewer than seven in 10 students who enter high school graduate in four years, according to the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. For children from low-income households, the graduation rate is barely more than 1 in 2. (more…)
