Asheville 4th in local tax burden

RALEIGH — Asheville’s local tax burden continues to rank as one of the highest among the state’s major cities, according to a Raleigh-based think tank.
A report issued Tuesday by the John Locke Foundation, an advocate for lower taxes, ranked the money paid by Asheville taxpayers to their city and county fourth-highest among the 29 largest North Carolina cities, the same rank as in last year’s report.
The average Asheville taxpayer shelled out $1,996 in property, sales and other taxes during the 2006 budget year, the foundation found.
Chad Adams, the group’s vice president for development, cautioned residents to weigh the tax figures against their quality of life. They might consider them a small price to pay for amenities like parks or garbage collection. (more…)
