Worthy fight: Parents have a responsibility to push for comprehensive sex-education

Robeson County public health officials won’t have to convince parents that comprehensive sex curriculum trumps abstinence-only education. A recent Journal of Adolescent Health study found 90 percent of North Carolina parents support comprehensive sex-education programs.
They want teachers to tell their children that abstinence guarantees safety from pregnancy and diseases. They also want schools to teach students about contraception and sexually transmitted diseases.
The trick for the Robeson County Health Department will be getting those parents involved in the effort to replace the state’s abstinence-only curriculum with a more comprehensive one.
If most families reject the one-size-fits-all abstinence policy, the school board should listen.
Counties are allowed to teach comprehensive sex education as long as the school board holds a hearing to gather input from the public first. (more…)
