Gubernatorial candidates focus on missing participant

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Democrats focused on the economy, while Republicans criticized the incumbent Democratic leaderships in debates held Thursday night. The debates were billed as the WITN-Inner Banks Media debate. The Daily Reflector of Greenville reported that Democrats spoke first, followed by Republicans an hour later.
Missing was Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue, one of the two major Democratic candidates. Her main opponent, state Treasurer Richard Moore, did participate, as did retired Air Force Col. Dennis Nielsen. Both remarked on Perdue's absence. "Candidates usually come around and talk to you when they're campaigning and you see the most of them; you see the least of them once they get elected," Nielsen said. "So I don't know what would happen if some get elected, how much you'll see them." (more…)
