False start: The cure for e-mail infractions is not to codify the status quo.

Let’s just go with the short version and risk a charge of oversimplification: The special panel that Gov. Mike Easley asked to review the state’s e-mail-deletion policy has concluded, at its very first meeting, that it must be each state employee’s call as to which e-mails to keep and which to destroy.
Does that sound to you like a ratification of the status quo? The same status quo from which rose an allegation that someone in the governor’s office wanted agency employees to avoid creating electronic footprints that outsiders might follow? Well, the allegation may have been false; but the panel’s finding, if heeded, could fix things so that no such mischief could be exposed if it did occur. (more…)
