State GOP leaders use Helms’ fear-and-prejudice strateg

Even though Jesse Helms hasn't been in office since he retired in 2003, North Carolina is still known as his state. Last week, as political pundits on television commented on the upcoming primary election May 6 in our state, I heard them talk about whether the old Helms tactics would once again rule. Listening to them talk, I was embarrassed to live here.
Helms, a former five-term Republican U.S. senator, was divisive at best. He gained seniority and clout as "Senator No" as he blocked a variety of Democratic bills and presidential appointments. He passed few laws of his own because lawmakers couldn't get past his abrasive style and extremely conservative, often bizarre ideas.(more…)
