Bill Graham, candidate for the Republican nomination for governor:
It is important that we maintain a balance and look at the costs and benefits when offering incentives. As steward of the public's money, it would be my responsibility to ensure that the state would receive an economic impact that would justify providing incentives. However, I believe that the best corporate incentive program is, in the words of Gov. Jim Martin, "better schools, better roads, and better jobs." If we have a good tax environment, good transportation infrastructure, good schools, and affordable health care, businesses will come to North Carolina. I would not remove incentives as an option, but it is not the first option that I would choose. We must be able to stay competitive with our neighboring states when recruiting businesses to our state and to do so we must keep as many options available as possible. We need new policies, tax and otherwise, that are beneficial for businesses already in the state. (more…)
