The Supreme Court ruled 6 to 3 on Monday that states can require voters
to provide a photo ID, a short bar to be sure but a long step toward
combating voter fraud. The court — split along conservative-liberal
lines, except for Justice John Paul Stephens, who drifted to the right —
made the ruling over the objections of Democrats and civil rights
organizations that say the higher standard is unconstitutional and will
keep the poor, elderly and minorities from casting ballots. Among their
arguments is that this is a solution for a problem that doesn’t exist,
but as we have just seen in Robeson County, there are those who would
cast illegal ballots. Stephens wrote in his opinion that the law “is
amply justified by the valid interest in protecting ‘the integrity and
reliability of the electoral process.”’ (more…)
