Senator takes safety seriously

Child safety is not a trivial issue for Sen. Bill Purcell. After seeing first-hand the results of carelessness, neglect and abuse, the now retired pediatrician from Laurinburg uses his position in the North Carolina General Assembly to promote legislation to ensure the health and safety of the state’s children.

“Seeing the injuries after 40 years in pediatrics,” he said, “once you see these injuries … once you have to tell a parent his child might have been saved if the child had been wearing a helmet on his bike, you don’t forget that.”

The Child Fatality Task Force supported by Purcell began discussing new ways to protect North Carolina children at a meeting on Monday. Past proposals from the group have done well in the recent legislative session.

The Task Force heard proposals on a number of issues including laws to restrict mopeds on highways, require trigger locks for handguns, overhaul in the state’s driver-education program and provide restrictions prohibiting children from riding on the back of motorcycles. (more…)
