County may face cost of maintenance

Richmond County officials were waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Last week it did, with a thud.
When state officials agreed to give local leaders a break on Medicaid costs, the gut reaction was it wouldn’t be long before the state found a way to transfer another cost onto local shoulders. When Raleigh giveth Raleigh usually finds a way to taketh away.
The thud came in the form of a proposal eyed by the 21st Century Transportation Committee. It is considering the transfer of some road maintenance responsibilities to local government. That was something local leaders were afraid would happen. Last session, the General Assembly passed a bill that gave local government the option of paying for road projects, but the legislation didn’t give the counties the mandate for paying for them.
