Perdue taking on McCrory in his hometown

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue criticized Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory in his hometown Tuesday, accusing him of "whining about crime" while vetoing a city budget that contained money to hire more police officers.
McCrory's gubernatorial campaign countered that the 2006 budget contained a property tax increase and said the number of police positions has increased 21 percent during his 13 years as mayor.
"The real problem North Carolina cities face is a broken state criminal justice system that turns criminals out on the street to commit more crime," McCrory spokeswoman Amy Auth said.
The Charlotte Observer reported that Perdue, the Democratic nominee for governor, mentioned at a breakfast forum in Charlotte that the mayor rejected a budget bill that would have added 70 police officers. The Democratic-controlled City Council overrode his veto. (more…)
