Forum focuses on how crime devastates community

An overcrowded prison system has some in local law enforcement feeling that criminals don't get put away long enough to deter them from offending again.
And a struggling economy could put additional strain on the system, said Deputy Chief David Conklin Jr. of the Wilmington Police Department.
"In this state, we do not put people in jail for a significant period of time," Conklin said to about 150 people who attended a forum on gun violence Monday night. "They have to put people out to put new people in."
The forum at Cape Fear Community College's north campus was sponsored by the Star-News. Conklin's frustration with a crowded judicial system was one of several topics discussed – most of them geared toward efforts by the community and police to reduce gun violence. (more…)
