‘Twas the week before Christmas

By Chris Fitzsimon
‘Twas the week before Christmas and in Raleigh and nearby,
The only creatures who were stirring were all FBI.
Grand juries, indictments, insider trading–oh my,
And Easley riding with Campbell, but not paying to fly.
There’s Mary’s job and her raise and Mike’s lot at the shore,
And Ruffin’s not talking, he must know what’s in store.
Insider trading’s the claim against Tony Rand,
Hogwash he says, and the charge will never stand.
Holding’s still working while Thomas Walker waits
For George to decide the politicians’ fates.
Corruption’s been the story for much of the year,
But there’s a lot more in Raleigh to boo and to cheer.
Perdue’s numbers are so low that she can just barely see them.
She’s in search of more prisoners to demand not to free them.
In her rush to do something, she forgot to dot her i’s,
And check with Cowell and with Cooper on 485.
People are anxious and worried and many are afraid
Of losing their home and no longer getting paid.
The recession is now over is many economists’ refrain,
But across North Carolina, there’s still plenty of pain.
But Wall Street’s happy once more and the bonuses are flowing
While family budgets are broken and the debts keep on growing.
They used our money to survive and now with disturbing new speed
They are fighting all the efforts to protect us from their greed.
The State Senate is changing, of that there’s no doubt,
So long Rand, so long Boseman and Hoyle is out.
Soles probably won’t run but Basnight says he will,
Nesbitt steps in for Rand, and they’re big shoes to fill.
The changing of some guards has John Davis’ brow a furrow,
He’s trying to convince us all it’s the new politburo.
The House seems more stable with far less turmoil,
As long as Hackney’s troops decide to stay loyal.
Fetzer and his crowd will takeover they sing,
With their agenda only to oppose everything.
No health care reform they always scream and shout,
No matter the 45 million without.
Wake’ s new Board of Ed has inspired the fears
That their promises will take us back 50 years.
There’s Tedesco, Malone, Debras Goldman and Prickett,
Goodbye diversity, resegregation’s the ticket
Margiotta’s the leader of the board’s new right faction,
Maybe scariest of all, he’s part of Called2Action.
The Senate race is on, Burr’s up for voters review,
For the last five years, we’ve seen little that’s new.
No matter the issue or people’s pleas, pulls, and tugs,
He listens to the companies that make all the drugs.
His opponent next year will be Kenneth, Cal or Elaine,
The DC crowd has spoken and Cal they did ordain.
The politics is fun but its policy that’s real
the decisions that are made that many families feel.
Mental health is still a mess, as people are forsaken,
Still suffering from the road that reform efforts have taken.
There’s lip service here and a few bits of good news,
But then budgets are slashed and the vulnerable lose.
Here’s hoping for a year in which things turn around,
When people find work, and the safety net’s sound.
When politicians make headlines for doing what’s right
Instead of walking behind lawyers in the media’s light.
Let’s hope for that year and work to make it come true,
It’s our government after all, set up for me and you.
